Beginning steps to building a pickleball court:

Site selection: Find a flat, level area with enough space to accommodate the court size and player movement; consider the sun exposure and orientation (north-south preferred). The easiest way to build a pickleball court is to convert a tennis, basketball or badminton court into a pickleball court. However, you'll have to build one from scratch if you don't have these courts. You'll need 30 by 60 feet for the entire setup. Court dimensions are 20 by 44 feet.

Drainage: If building outdoors, consider proper drainage to prevent water from accumulation on the court. The concrete pad should drop one quarter of an inch from the center of the court to the edge. This is very important to the court paint’s longevity.

Surface preparation: Once you have the court location and a general construction layout, you need to think about the surface materials you will use. The two main materials used for the construction of these courts are:

  • Asphalt: Although this is one of the most affordable options, it needs additional upkeep. Acrylic court paints do not stick well to the petroleum in asphalt. Hence, more repainting of the court.

  • Concrete: This is the best court surfacing for durability, minimal maintenance and longevity. The court paints stick very well to concrete.

  • Snap-together plastic: This pickleball court surfacing can be applied over concrete or asphalt.

The court material's longevity will depend on various factors, including how frequently the court is used and the amount and frequency of care or maintenance it receives. You can choose the materials based on your budget and specific needs.

If you have an old pickleball court with a dilapidated surface, and all it needs to be functional is repainting, your main focus should be on the paint materials. Choose quality paints for pickleball court resurfacing to ensure the surface remains for long periods. We recommend acrylic court paints from a manufacture, not from resellers.

Fencing:

Consider adding fencing around the court for ball containment and spectator viewing. The court should have outer boundaries that keep the ball in play. This is crucial for multi-court pickleball courts, where the perimeter fence also provides players and spectators with a sense of security. Although there are several fencing options, perimeter fences made of wire are the most common because they allow spectators and players to see into and out of the court. Additionally, wire fences allow the breeze and light to pass through easily. Fences also save players from a lot of leg work by keeping the balls close. Pickleball perimeter fences can be 4, 6, 8, and 10 feet tall, to protect players and spectators, the fencing material should be coated with vinyl that come in a range of colors and is resistant to rust.

Lighting:

If needed, install lighting for evening play. Consider installing lights depending on the site and the time players play the sport. Good-quality area lights are a must for recreational centers and sports clubs where players may play at night or late afternoon going into the night. Include 2 or 4 poles, each 18-20 feet high. Each pole should be mounted at the center and ends of the court and should be 24 inches back from the court. Today’s LED bulbs are very efficient and they have an incredible amount of light with low electric usage

Consider a Roof or Vinyl Sunshade:

Roofing is an optional step and depends on the budget. Consider including a vinyl sunshade or roof for your an outdoor pickleball court to help maintain the surface and offer protection from the elements.

NET:

Ensure you get the right pickleball net system for the court, consisting mainly of poles and net. Different types of nets and poles have different characteristics. However, you should choose poles that can withstand the elements if you're building an outdoor pickleball court. In addition to two poles and one net, net systems include one ratchet and sleeves. We suggest the bollard type net post as it is smallest, the strongest and safest system.  Only true pickleball nets are manufactured to regulation. The regulation net height is 34 inches in the middle and 36 inches at the sidelines.
